If you’re confused about the differences between the two, here’s a breakdown of the key differences.
Direct Thermal Labels
A direct thermal label is a type of label that is printed using heat from a thermal print head. The label consists of thermal paper or synthetic material that is coated with a heat-sensitive layer. When heat is applied to the label, the heat-sensitive layer turns black, creating an image or text on the label.
Direct thermal labels are commonly used for short-term labelling applications such as shipping labels, food packaging, and product labelling. They are also used in industries that require high-speed printing, such as logistics and warehousing.
However, direct thermal labels are sensitive to heat and light and can fade over time if exposed to these elements. They are also susceptible to scratches and abrasions, which can damage the heat-sensitive layer and reduce the quality of the print.
Types of Direct Thermal Labels
- Thermal Economy Face – offers affordability and is used for short-life labelling.
- Thermal Top Coated Face – offers more protection than Economy against smudging and limited protection against moisture.
- Thermal Top Polyprop Synthetic – offers smudge and scratch protection with high resistance to moisture and water.
Thermal Transfer Labels
Thermal transfer labels are labels that are printed using a thermal transfer printer. These printers use a thermal transfer ribbon, which is a special type of ink ribbon that melts onto the label material when heated. The heated print head transfers the ink from the ribbon onto the label, creating a high-quality, durable print.
Thermal transfer labels are commonly used in applications that require long-lasting, high-quality labels, such as product identification, asset tracking, and compliance labelling. They can be printed on a variety of label materials, including paper, polyester, polypropylene, and vinyl, and can be used in a range of environments, including indoor and outdoor settings.
